THE WINERY
Solid and imposing as few, the structure appears almost as a fortress, partly underground: in the back, the difference in level of the land allows grapes, men and means to get directly to the top floor: here the fermentation takes place, then through a falling system based on gravity wines are moved to the lower floors for ageing.
Identity
HISTORY
The history of the Scacciadiavoli winery begun in 1884: Ugo Boncompani Ludovisi, prince of Piombino, founded a visionary and avant-garde French-style winery, destined to become a cutting-edge technological model for the entire Umbrian territory.
1884
The Scacciadiavoli estate has its roots in 1884, when the Prince of Piombino, Ugo Boncompagni Ludovisi, invested a huge capital in an estate of 180 hectares between the municipalities of Montefalco, Gualdo Cattaneo and Giano Dell’Umbria, where he planted 150 hectares of guyot-trained vines.
Until then, the ancient vite maritata (vine married to a tree) was the most widespread system of cultivation in Umbria, and these were the first guyot-specialized vineyards.
1892
The winery was the first to produce a blend of Sangiovese and Sagrantino, forerunner of the Montefalco Rosso and certified as early as 1892.
1921
Under the property of the second owner, Senator Rolandi Ricci, the winery was the first to vinify the Sagrantino grape in the dry version whit two vintages that remained in history; the 1921 and the 1924.
1954
In 1954 the Pambuffetti family from Foligno, known traders in the agro-food sector, took over the company: the one who acquired it was Amilcare, who as a boy, when he was just fourteen years old, had worked on the estate as a factor.
77|92
From 1977 Amilcare’s children Alfio, Settimio and Mario carried on their father’s activites and were follwed in 1992 by Settimio’s children: Amilcare, Carlo and Francesco.
2005
The common thread with the origins of the company, one of the most noble and identity of Umbria, has never broken and the tradition is more alive and modern than ever. The winery was the first, in 2005, to vinify the Sagrantino variety with the classic method, and to launch on the market the now famous Sagrantino based sparkling wines Brut and Rosé Scacciadiavoli.
2017
Liù and Iacopo Pambuffetti (sons of Amilcare and Francesco), together with their brothers Amilcare Jr, Romeo and Fiammetta, lead the Scacciadiavoli Winery keeping alive the deep connection with their origins.
2023
In 2023, the sparkling wine adventure culminates with the acquisition of a brand of Champagne: Marie Clugny.
Main characters
The estate has remained intact throughout the decades. The three owners (Ugo Boncompagni, Vittorio Rolandi Ricci, the Pambuffetti family) have not modified the extension of the land nor the central building, the winery. Since 1954 the company has been in the hands of the Pambuffetti family, now in its fourth generation. Amilcare and Carlo are joined by their sons and grandchildren Liù, Iacopo, Romeo, Fiammetta, Amilcare jr.
Sola Fides
Is an ancient Latin motto, and the feeling that characterizes the peasant culture. It means “Only with the faith in God” (I will succeed, and the harvest will repay the sacrifices made during the entire year).
Big Bench
Community Project
The Big Bench you can see at Scacciadiavoli is one of the Big Benches projected by the American designer Chris Bangle, who started the Big Bench Community Project to support local enterprise, tourism and craftsmanship in the towns that host these out-of-scale installations. The colors of the Big Bench, white and red, are a tribute to the rural architecture of Umbria and to the typical color of the leaves of the Sagrantino vines.
